THE BEFANA: MYTHS, LEGENDS AND POEMS

In Italian folklore, the Befana is a nice old woman who flies on her broom every year on the night between the 5th and 6th of January, which is the Epiphany day, to bring presents to children.

Nel folklore italiano la Befana è una simpatica vecchietta che vola sulla sua scopa ogni anno nella notte tra il 5 e il 6 gennaio, che è il giorno dell'Epifania, per portare i regali ai bambini.

That's why the Befana carries a big bag on her back. Candies and presents if they are good or a lump of coal if they are bad.

Ecco perché la Befana porta sulla schiena un grande sacco. Caramelle e regali se sono buoni o un pezzo di carbone se sono cattivi.

Legend dates back to pre-Christian traditions, in which it was believed that in 12 nights following festival of the sun god and the fire, magical female figures crossed the sky riding magic brooms, scattering their benevolent magic on newly sown fields below.

La leggenda risale alle tradizioni pre-cristiane, in cui si credeva che nelle 12 notti dopo festa del dio del sole e del fuoco, figure femminili magiche solcassero il cielo a cavallo di scope magiche, spargendo la loro benevola magia sui campi sottostanti appena seminati.

Catholic religion harshly condemned these beliefs, labeling them as satanic rituals, as was worshiped a magical female figure. It was not enough for the rigor of this condemnation to stop the peasants to believe that these came to pass night flights, and were approached more and more to the forces of evil and not to what was to be originally rites benefits to ingratiate himself with Mother Nature.

La religione cattolica condannò duramente queste credenze, etichettandole come riti satanici, in quanto era venerata una figura femminile magica. Non fu sufficiente il rigore di questa condanna per far smettere ai contadini di credere che questi voli notturni avvenissero, e furono accostati sempre di più alle forze del male e non a quelli che dovevano essere originariamente riti benefici per ingraziarsi Madre Natura. 

On the night of 6 January, Mother Nature, tired for having given all his energies during the year, had struggled  to service the farmers, governing the forces of nature, appeared in the form of an old witch and benevolent, that he flew to the skies with a broom. Dry now, Mother Nature was ready to be burned as a branch, so that from the ashes reborn the young mother nature, who would take her place for a year, until the next epiphany. Before perishing, however, the old woman went to distribute gifts and sweets to all, so planting the seeds that would be born during the next year.

Nella notte del 6 gennaio, Madre Natura, stanca per aver donato tutte le sue energie durante l'anno, aveva faticato al servizio degli agricoltori, governando le forze della natura, appariva sotto forma di una vecchia e benevola strega, che volava per i cieli con una scopa. Oramai secca, Madre Natura era pronta per essere bruciata come un ramo, in modo che dalle ceneri rinascesse la giovane madre natura, che avrebbe occupato il suo posto per un anno, fino alla successiva epifania. Prima di perire, tuttavia, la vecchia andava a distribuire doni e dolci a tutti, in modo da piantare i semi che sarebbero nati durante l'anno successivo.

According to Christian tradition the Three Kings, directed to Bethlehem to bring gifts to the Christ Child, failing to find the way, they asked information to an old woman. Despite their insistence, in order to follow them to visit the small, the woman did not leave the house to accompany them. Later, she regretted and, after preparing a basket of pastries, she left the house and went to look for them, but he failed. So he stopped at every house that was on the road, giving candy to children he met, in the hope that one of them is the baby Jesus. Since then she would travel the world, making gifts to all children, to be forgiven.

Secondo la tradizione cristiana i Re Magi, diretti a Betlemme per portare doni a Gesù Bambino, non riuscendo a trovare la strada, chiesero informazioni a una vecchia. Nonostante la loro insistenza, al fine di seguire loro di visitare il piccolo, la donna non ha lasciato la casa per accompagnarli. In seguito, si pentì e, dopo aver preparato un cesto di dolci, uscì di casa e andò a cercarli, senza riuscirci. Così si fermò ad ogni casa che era sulla strada, dando caramelle ai bambini che incontrava, nella speranza che uno di loro è il bambino Gesù. Da allora si sarebbe viaggiare per il mondo, facendo regali a tutti i bambini, per farsi perdonare.

Some people imagine the Befana with white hair, others with black hair but everybody agrees she has a long crooked nose, broken shoes and a patched dress and that's how she is remembered in various poems:

Alcune persone immaginano la Befana con i capelli bianchi, altri con i capelli neri, ma tutti sono d'accordo che ha un naso storto lungo, scarpe rotte e un vestito rattoppato ed è così che è ricordata in diverse poesie:

The poem deals with every aspect of our lives and the Befana, therefore, could not fail to interest famous or unknown poets.

La poesia affronta ogni aspetto della nostra vita e la Befana, dunque, non poteva non interessare famosi o sconosciuti poeti. 

La Befana by Giovanni Pascoli is perhaps the most beautiful poem ever written on nice old lady.

La Befana di Giovanni Pascoli è forse la più bella poesia mai scritta sulla simpatica vecchietta.

This poem is sad but very nice. The poet, through the traditional figure of the Befana, focuses on the problem of poverty. The Befana observes two mothers, both with three children: one is serene and prepares presents, the other weeps because her children have nothing. Useful as food for thought along with the older children.

Questa poesia è triste ma molto bella. Il poeta, attraverso la figura tradizionale della Befana, pone l’attenzione sul problema della povertà. La Befana osserva due mamme, entrambe con tre bambini: una è serena e prepara regali, l’altra piange perché i suoi figli non hanno niente. Utile come spunto di riflessione insieme ai bambini più grandi.

Vecchia, dev'esser vecchia per davvero.

In the poem "The Befana of the adults" Maria Loretta Giraldo hopes that the Befana brings some presents to adults, that often need them, but they don't ask  how  the children do.

Nella poesia "La Befana degli adulti" Maria Loretta Giraldo si augura che la Befana porta alcuni regali per gli adulti, che spesso ne hanno bisogno, ma non chiedono come fanno i bambini.
