GIVE BLOOD

Blood is something we all expect to be there for us when we need it, yet only 4% of us give blood - many people would not be alive today if it wasn't for the generosity of donors.

Il sangue è qualcosa che tutti noi ci aspettiamo sia a disposizione quando ne abbiamo bisogno, ma solo il 4% di noi dona il sangue - molte persone non sarebbero oggi vive se non fosse stato per la generosità dei donatori. 

Maintaining a regular supply of blood is not easy. By giving blood, every donor is contributing to provide life-saving products whenever and wherever they are needed.

Il mantenimento di un regolare approvvigionamento di sangue non è facile. Donando il sangue, ogni donatore contribuisce a fornire prodotti salvavita quando e dove sono necessari.

Most people can give blood. As long as you are fit and healthy, weigh over 50 kg and are aged between 18 and 60 you should be able to give blood.

La maggior parte delle persone può donare il sangue. Finché siete in forma e in buona salute, pesate più di 50 kg e siete di età compresa tra i 18 e i 60  dovreste essere in grado di donare il sangue.

White cells protect the body from infection. They are much fewer in number than red blood cells. The most common type of white blood cell is the neutrophil, which is the "immediate response" cell and lives less than a day.

I globuli bianchi proteggono l'organismo dalle infezioni. Essi sono molto meno numerosi dei globuli rossi. Il tipo di globulo bianco più comune è il neutrofilo, che è la cellula "a risposta immediata" e vive meno di un giorno. 

Platelets are tiny cells used to help patients at a high risk of bleeding and contribute to the repair of damaged body tissue.

Plasma provides proteins, nutrients and a clotting agent that is vital to stop bleeding; it is the most versatile component of blood.

There are 4 main blood types A, B, AB and O, of which group O is the most common (47% of population). The blood type is determined by proteins called antigens found on the surface of red blood cells. If you have the antigen A on the red blood cells then you have got type A blood. When B antigen is present, you have type B blood, when both A and B are present, you have type AB blood. When antigens neither are present you have type O blood.

Ci sono 4 principali gruppi sanguigni A, B, AB e O, dei quali il gruppo O è il più comune (47% della popolazione). Il gruppo sanguigno è determinato da proteine chiamate antigeni presenti sulla superficie dei globuli rossi. Se avete l'antigene A sui globuli rossi, allora avete sangue di gruppo A. Quando è presente l’antigene B, avete il sangue di gruppo B, quando sono presenti sia l'antigene A che l'antigene B, avete il sangue di tipo AB. Quando non sono presenti antigeni, avete il sangue di gruppo O.

Another level of specificity is added to blood type by examining the presence or absence of the Rh protein (Rhesus).

Un altro livello di specificità viene aggiunto al gruppo sanguigno esaminando la presenza o l'assenza della proteina  Rh (Rhesus).

 

The name Rhesus comes from the Rhesus monkeys in which the protein was first discovered.

Il nome Rhesus deriva dalle scimmie Rhesus in cui la proteina è stata scoperta. 

Each blood type is either positive "+" (has the Rh protein) or negative "-" (no Rh protein).

Ogni gruppo sanguigno è o positivo "+" (è presente la proteina Rh) o negativo "-" (è assente la proteina Rh).

 

For example, a person whose blood type is "A positive" (A +), has both type A and Rh proteins on the surface of their red blood cells.

Ad esempio, una persona il cui tipo di sangue è "A positivo" (A +), ha sulla superficie dei suoi globuli rossi sia la molecola di tipo A sia la proteina Rh. 

The Rh protein is found in the blood of 85% of people, the remaining 15% are Rhesus negative.

La proteina Rh si trova nel sangue dell'85% delle persone, il restante 15% è Rh negativo.

When conducting a blood transfusion, it is important to carefully match the donor and recipient blood types.

Quando si esegue una trasfusione di sangue, è importante abbinare con attenzione i gruppi sanguigni del donatore e del ricevente.

 

A patient must receive a blood type that is compatible with their own blood type.

Un paziente deve ricevere un tipo di sangue che è compatibile con il proprio gruppo sanguigno. 

If the blood types are not compatible, red blood cells will clump together, making clots that can block vessels and cause death.

Se i tipi di sangue non sono compatibili, i globuli rossi si aggregano insieme, creando coaguli che possono bloccare i vasi e causare la morte.

In general a person with type A blood can donate to a person with type A or AB.

In generale, una persona con sangue di tipo A può donare ad una persona con il sangue di  tipo A o AB.

A person with type B blood can donate to a person with type B or AB.

Una persona con il sangue di tipo B può donare ad una persona con  il sangue di tipo B o AB. 

A person with type AB blood can only donate to a person with AB.

A person with O type blood can donate to anyone. This is because type O blood has no antigen on its surface and is often called a universal donor.

Una persona con gruppo sanguigno O può donare a chiunque. Questo è perché il sangue di tipo O non ha antigene sulla sua superficie ed è spesso chiamato un donatore universale.

Blood type AB is the universal recipient as they can receive red blood cells of any ABO type.

Il gruppo sanguigno AB è il ricevitore universale poiché può ricevere i globuli rossi di qualsiasi tipo ABO. 

In an emergency if there is no time for blood grouping the person in need of a transfusion would be given type O blood.
