GROUNDHOG DAY

Groundhog Day is celebrated in the United States and Canada on February 2nd. Based on trying to guess when winter is going to end, the tradition holds that if the groundhog (Marmota monax) pops his head out but sees a shadow when emerging from its burrow, and pops back down, winter will go on for another six weeks. But, if it doesn't see its shadow, and the groundhog comes out of its burrow, then it's thought that winter will be over soon.

It is also said that the Romans celebrated a similar event which also held that if a Hedgehog emerging from its hibernation in the moonlight could see its shadow, there would be six more weeks of winter.

The Groundhog Day is celebrated on February 2, just like Candlemas.
Candlemas Day event has similarities to rituals performed a long time ago by the Celts (a festival called "Imbolc"), which later transformed in part to the German tradition of Candlemas.

Groundhog Day is a big deal in some towns, especially in the town of Punxsutawney.

The city of Punxsutawney (name derived from the language of Native Americans which means "City of sandflies") is located in Pennsylvania and is inhabited by little more than six thousand souls. The most famous resident of the city is Punxsutawney Phil, a groundhog that, according to tradition, would have the capability to detect if the winter will be longer than usual or if the spring will make its appearance in proper time (http://www.groundhog.org/). Groundhog Punxsutawney Phil is ritually taken up to Gobbler's Knob each year and is placed into an artificial burrow on a false tree stump. In Pennsylvania, Groundhog lodges hold early morning celebrations that involve food, games, speeches, and songs in the Pennsylvanian German dialect.

Many news stations will carry the event live on morning shows.

Make a chart to see what really happens to the weather from this day until you feel like it's really spring. Did the groundhog get it right?
Fallo fino all'arrivo della primavera. La marmotta aveva ragione?

Watch Bill Murray's 1993 movie Groundhog Day. This movie is a beloved classic or find a documentary on groundhogs!

Consider holding a Groundhog Day party or make groundhog day. Shaping food into a groundhog is fun for kids and kids-at-heart alike. Whether you're holding a party or just wanting to make some snacks, this is a great way to get into the Groundhog Day spirit.

Tips (Suggerimenti)

Did you know that groundhogs are also known as woodchucks or whistling pigs? The latter name is meant to convey their high pitched sounds they make to communicate.

INTERNATIONAL HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY

The UN General Assembly designated January 27 — the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau — as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. On this annual day of commemoration, the UN urges every member state to honor the victims of the Nazi era and to develop educational programs to help prevent future genocides.
It commemorates the genocide that resulted in the death of an estimated 6 million Jews, 1 million Gypsies, 250,000 mentally and physically disabled people, and 9000 homosexual men by the Nazi regime and its collaborators.

United Nations General Assembly resolution 60/7 rejects any denial of the Holocaust as an event and condemns all manifestations of religious intolerance, incitement, harassment or violence against persons or communities based on ethnic origin or religious belief.

It also calls for actively preserving the Holocaust sites that served as Nazi death camps, concentration camps, forced labor camps and prisons.

The essence of the text lies in its twofold approach: one that deals with the memory and remembrance of those who were massacred during the Holocaust, and the other with educating future generations of its horrors.

“The International Day in memory of the victims of the Holocaust is thus a day on which we must reassert our commitment to human rights. [...]
We must also go beyond remembrance, and make sure that new generations know this history.
We must apply the lessons of the Holocaust to today’s world. And we must do our utmost so that all peoples may enjoy the protection and rights ...”
