THE CAT AND THE MOON

Dedicated to Mercedes and all those who love cats.

The Cat and the Moon - by W. B. Yeats (1865-1939)

The cat went here and there
And the moon spun round like a top,
And the nearest kin of the moon,
The creeping cat, looked up.
Black Minnaloushe stared at the moon,
For, wander and wail as he would,
The pure cold light in the sky
Troubled his animal blood.
Minnaloushe runs in the grass
Lifting his delicate feet.
Do you dance, Minnaloushe, do you dance?
When two close kindred meet,
What better than call a dance?
Maybe the moon may learn,
Tired of that courtly fashion,
A new dance turn.
Minnaloushe creeps through the grass
From moonlit place to place,
The sacred moon overhead
Has taken a new phase.
Does Minnaloushe know that his pupils
Will pass from change to change,
And that from round to crescent,
From crescent to round they range?
Minnaloushe creeps through the grass
Alone, important and wise,
And lifts to the changing moon
His changing eyes.

Il gatto e la luna
Il gatto andava di qua e di là
e la luna come trottola girava,
e il più stretto parente della luna,
il gatto strisciante, guardò in su.
Il nero Minnaloushe fissava la luna,
perché, per quanto vagasse e gemesse,
quella luce fredda e limpida nel cielo
turbava il suo sangue animale.
Minnaloushe corre nell'erba
alzando le sue zampe delicate.
Vuoi ballare, Minnaloushe, vuoi ballare?
solo, importante e saggio,
e leva alla mutevole luna
i suoi occhi mutevoli.

YOUTH

Life is a journey not a destination!
The best is yet to come
Il meglio deve ancora arrivare

YOUTH
poem by Samuel Ullman
LA GIOVINEZZA
poesia di Samuel Ullman

Youth is not a time of life - it is a state of mind,
it is a temper of the will,
a quality of the imagination,
a vigor of the emotions,
a predominance of courage over timidity,
of the appetite for adventure over love of ease.

Nobody grows old by merely living a number of years.
People grow old only by deserting their ideals.
Years wrinkle the skin,
but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.
Worry, doubt, self-distrust,
fear and despair - these are the long,
long years that bow the head and
turn the growing spirit back to dust.

Whether they are sixteen or seventy,
there is in every being's heart
the love of wonder,
the sweet amazement at the stars
and star like things and thoughts,
the undaunted challenge of events,
the unfailing childlike appetite
for what is to come next,
and the joy and the game of life.
Che si abbia sedici anni o settanta,
c'è nel cuore di ogni essere
l'amore del meraviglioso,
il dolce stupore per le cose sfavillanti
e i pensieri luminosi,

You are as young as your faith,
as old as your doubt;
as young as your self-confidence,
as old as your fear,
as young as your hope,
as old as your despair.
When the wires are all down
and all the innermost core of your heart
is covered with the snows of pessimism
and the ice of cynicism,
then you are grown old indeed.
Voi siete giovani come la vostra fede,
vecchi come il vostro dubbio;
allora siete invecchiati davvero.

But so long as your heart receives messages
of beauty, cheer, courage, grandeur
and power from the earth,
from man and from the Infinite,
so long you are young.
Ma finché il vostro cuore riceve messaggi
di bellezza, allegria, coraggio, grandiosità
e forza dalla terra,
da un uomo e dall'Infinito,
così a lungo sarete giovani.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN

Halloween ... Until a few years ago it was only the name, almost unpronounceable, a "party" overseas, which for one night only set in motion a huge commercial machine. But we Italians were sleeping soundly because it all seemed so far away, far away from the distances that separate us from USA, for example, and culture. Who would have thought that instead Halloween would fill the shop windows of our roads with strange Italian costumes and grotesque masks and horrible faces cut in vegetables, such as marrows and pumpkins, where a candle is placed inside to make them look alive. Traditionally this was to frighten away evil spirits, but today they are used to create a scary menacing atmosphere.
Halloween…

Halloween comes from the fact that October 31 is the eve of All Saints' Day, the day in which the the tradition of Catholic Christian celebrates all the saints. This date, November 1, is called in English All Hallows' Day (Hallow is the archaic English word meaning Holy). At this point it should be noted that among ancient peoples on the day does not begin at the stroke of midnight, but a few hours earlier, at sunset. The eve of All Saints is known as All Hallow 'Eve, but also All Hallows' Even (which contains the concept of "eve" to that of "evening"); it is easy to see how the latter definition has contracted Hallows' Even, and from there on Halloween, the step was short.

Halloween is not born in America but has ancient origins traceable in Ireland, when the green Erin was dominated by the Celts. From Ireland, the tradition was then exported to the United States by immigrants, who, moved by the terrible famine '800, headed numerous in the new land.

Ancient origins lie in the more distant past traditions of European: is traced to when the tribal people used to divide the year into two parts according to the transhumance of cattle. In the period between October and November, preparing the land to  winter, it was necessary to hospitalize the cattle in a confined space for his survival in the cold season: this is the Halloween period.

In Europe the recurrence spread with the Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in Ireland, Great Britain and in Northern France. The Celts were mainly a pastoral people. The rhythms of their lives were, therefore, articulated by the times that raising cattle imposed. At the end of the summer season, the shepherds brought their flocks to the valley, to prepare for the arrival of winter and the beginning of the new year. For the Celts, in fact, the new year did not begin on January 1, as for us today, but on November 1, officially ended when the hot season and started the season of darkness and cold, as long as you shut at home for many months, sheltering from the cold, building tools and spending their evenings telling stories and legends. The transition from summer to winter and from the old to the new year was celebrated with long celebrations, the Samhain, their New Year's Eve. In Gaelic samhain means "end of the summer.

In gaelico Samhain significa infatti "fine dell'estate"

Death was the main theme of the festival, in tune with what was happening in nature during the winter season life seems to be silent, when in fact it renews underground, where traditionally, among other things, lie the dead. From here you can understand the juxtaposition of Samhain to the cult of the dead. The Celts believed that on the eve of every new year, ie October 31,Samhain called him all the spirits of the dead, who lived in a land of eternal youth and happiness called Tir nan Oge, and that the forces of spirits could join the world of the living, thereby causing the dissolution of the temporary laws of time and space and making sure that the afterlife is merged with the world of the living and allowing the wandering spirits to roam undisturbed on Earth. Samhain was, therefore, a celebration that united the fear of death and spirits gaiety of the celebrations for the end of the old year.

During the night of October 31 rallies were held in the woods and hills for the ceremony of the Sacred Fire and animal sacrifices were made. Dressed in grotesque masks, the Celts were returning to the village, under the light with lanterns made from onions carved inside which were placed the embers of the Sacred Fire. After these rituals, the Celts celebrated for 3 days, disguising themselves with the skins of animals killed to scare the spirits.

In Ireland spread the custom of lighting torches and torches outside the doors and leave food and milk for the souls of the dead who have paid a visit to their families, so that they could refresh themselves and decide not to make jokes to the living.

The Christianity tried to incorporate the old pagan festivals by giving them a connotation compatible with its message.
Pope Boniface IV instituted the feast of All Saints, the feast was set up on 13 May 610 and celebrated every year in That same day, they were honored the Christians killed for their faith. For over two centuries the two holidays proceeded side by side, until Pope Gregory III made it coincide dates. According to other sources, he was instead Sant'Odilone of Cluny who in 1048 decided to move the Catholic celebration in early November in order to overthrow the worship of Samhain.

That's All Saint's Day was moved from May 13 to November 1 to give Christians an opportunity to recall all the saints, and the next day, all Christians dead. For this reason in the countries of the English language became the party Hallowmas, which means "Mass in honor of the saints"; Eve became All Hallows Eve, which was transformed into the current name, Halloween.

In the mid-nineteenth century, Ireland was hit by a terrible famine. At that time, to escape poverty, many people decided to leave the island and attempt fortune in the United States, where they created a strong community. Inside it were kept alive the traditions and customs of their country, and among them was celebrated Halloween on October 31.

In the United States the various traditions related to the celebration of All Saints came together, until you get to the modern celebrations. Already in 1910 the American factories produced a whole series of products related solely to this party. He takes this time of the connotation of "night of the jokes" or "Devil's Night".

In Ireland, the recurrence of Samhain was characterized by two colors: orange, to commemorate the harvest and with it the end of the summer, and black, to represent the impending darkness of winter. In addition, the black is the color of the sacred pagan deities that govern the realm of the dead. The orange reflects the agricultural nature of Halloween, which dates back to pre-Christian times and being the color of pumpkins and autumn leaves, evokes the spirit of the season. That is why, still, the typical colors of Halloween are orange and black, heavily used in costumes and decorations.

On Halloween night the kids have fun in the famous game of"trick or threat". Disguised with masks and costumes monstrous, go from house to house asking for candy or a few coins. If you do not receive anything, can play a bad joke to the owners of the house, how to empty the trash in the garden or attacking empty cans to the exhaust pipe of the car.The tradition of this game seems to have originated in Europe in the ninth century AD, when it was called by the British Souling, or "alms of souls."

At that time, November 2 Christians wandered from village to village asking for alms in the "bread of the soul", a sweet square-shaped garnished with raisins, in exchange for a promise to pray for the souls of the dead. More "soul cakes" a person received, the more prayers they promised to pray for this person deceased members of the family who had donated the bread. Returning back again over the centuries, it is said that on the night of Samhain, the fairies were used to do some "tricks" to humans, leading them to get lost in the "hills of Fate", where they remained trapped forever. The Celts then, to earn the favor of the fairies used to offer food or milk that was left on the steps of their homes. The custom of the children to knock on the doors of the houses asking for candy, the Celts could derive from the custom of leaving food and milk out of the door, hoping to appease the spirits around during the night of October 31 and prevent their misdeeds.

During the night of October 31 is the tradition that anyone, young and old, wearing a mask, usually scary, like ghosts, witches, vampires, werewolves, and more and more frequently in recent years, famous people of horror cinema.

The habit of dressing up on Halloween Celtic probably derives from the custom of wearing animal skins and monstrous masks during the rites of Samhain and the ignition of the Sacred Fire, to scare the spirits and keep them away from the villages.

Very popular symbol of Halloween, the bat is connected to witchcraft and death in many different cultures. The blood of bat was also used  for the preparation of potions and ointments. When the witches were strongly associated with halloween, even the bats were. Today bats are still feared in many parts of the world, and many believe that they are "creatures of the devil."

During the Middle Ages, many people believed that owls had something to do with witchcraft. It was said that on the night of halloween, demons in the form of owls were traveling together to the witches and their cats aboard broomsticks to go to the witches' Sabbath.

During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance it was thought that broomsticks were the first means of transport of witches. To fly the witches were using a special ointment made of poisonous herbs, fat and other ingredients. Then he said the witch spells and sprinkle his body and the broomstick with this ointment. They could even become invisible as they flew.

Potevano addirittura diventare invisibili mentre volavano.

Halloween symbol par excellence is a Jack-o'-lantern, a pumpkin from which they were removed and the part above the stem and removed the inner pulp and seeds to leave the empty shell. Is carved to derive a template, usually a grotesque face lit by a candle placed inside.

This object is inherited from Irish folklore and originates from the legend of a "Ne'er-do-well" ("I do not combine a right") called Stingy Jack, a slacker and punter from bad temper, very addicted to alcohol.

A Halloween evening, after yet another hangover, the Devil appeared to him willing to take possession of his soul, a sinner. Jack asked the Devil that was allowed to drink a nightcap. Having obtained permission, he lamented the fact that he had no money to pay for the drink, so it begged the Devil to turn into a 6 pence coin. Mutation has occurred, Jack grabbed the coin and put it in his wallet, having the characteristic of a cross embroidered on it. Imprisoned hopelessly, to regain the freedom, the Devil accepted the pact proposed by Jack, who was to be delayed by a year his death.

The eve of All Saints next, the Devil appeared again to get the soul of man. This time Jack offered him a bet: would not be able to fall from a tree. The Devil smiled and accepted, climbing up a nearby tree. It was then that Jack carved a cross on the bark, which prevented the Devil to jump down.

With victory in hand, Jack proposed a pact with the Devil: he would have canceled the cross, if he had committed not to tempt more. After about a year, Jack died. At his knock on the doors of Paradise was told that he could not enter because he had led a dissolute life full of sins. Reaches the hell, even the Devil denied him permission to enter, because they are still offended by how he had been tricked by the man. However, the Devil gave Jack an ember that illuminate the road in the dark limbo. Jack strove to last longer that light and placed it in a hollowed turnip, and so derive a lantern.

Since then, all the night of the eve of All Saints is possible to see the flame of Jack, who wanders in search of his road. Since then, Jack was nicknamed Jack O'Lantern (but Hob O'Lantern, Fox Fire, Corpse Candle, Will O 'The Wisp).

Halloween is the day when Jack looks for a place to feel comfortable and all the people have to hang a lantern outside the door to indicate to the poor wandering soul that their home is no place for him.

It will be noted that in the legend speaks of a turnip, not a pumpkin. The explanation for this lies in the fact that the Irish landed in America no longer had available to them the tuber and resorted, therefore, to the big yellow pumpkins, easily available in the new land, and much larger.

It 's very likely that the Christian understanding of death and the afterlife has influenced the perception of Halloween in the following centuries, giving the tone of darkness and fear, that even today, although in a completely symbolic, characterizes this festival. With the passage of time, what more is left as the content of Halloween is, in fact, the dismal aspect of the afterlife, with the ghosts, the dead who rise from their graves, lost souls that haunt those who in life had brought them, damage. This aspect is, in some way, exorcised by the masks and the jokes characteristic of this festival.

The spirit level

I ask forgiveness from the fans of Prince Antonio de Curtis (Totò) if I present the beautiful poem "The spirit level " in English. My intent is simply to let people know this work in verse to those unfamiliar with the language of Naples .... or, if you want, is simply a game.

'A livella

The spirit level
(By  Antonio Caputo & Dario Velleca)

'A livella
( dialetto napoletano)
Every year on the 2nd of November,
it is usual for the dead care, to go to the Cemetery.
Everyone should do this present;
Everyone should have this thought.

Ogn'anno, il due
novembre,
c'è l'usanza per i defunti
andare al Cimitero.
Ognuno ll'adda fà chesta crianza;
ognuno adda tené chistu penziero.
Every year, exactly on this day,

of this sad and unhappy happening,
I go there too, and with some flowers I garnish
the grave stone of Auntie "Vincenza".

This year an adventure has happened to me ...
after completed the sad homage,
(My God!) I am still scared if I think at it
but then I got braveness.

St'anno m'é capitato 'navventura...
dopo di aver compiuto il triste omaggio
(Madonna!) si ce penzo, che paura!
ma po' facette un'anema e curaggio.

The fact is the following, listen to me:
We were next to the closing time,
when slowly slowly I was going out,
having a look at some graves.

'O fatto è chisto, statemi a sentire:
s'avvicinava ll'ora d'à chiusura,

io, tomo tomo, stavo per uscire,
buttando un occhio a qualche sepoltura.

"Here sleeps in peace the nobleman marquis,
lord of Rovigo and Belluno,
brave hero of 1000 enterprises,
dead on 11th of May 1931"

"Qui dorme in pace il nobile marchese
signore di Rovigo e di Belluno
ardimentoso eroe di mille imprese
morto l'11 maggio del '31".

A Logo with a crown at the very top ...
below a cross made of bulbs;

three bunch of roses with a mourning list ...
Candles, big candles and six little candles.

'O stemma cu 'a curona 'ncoppa a tutto...
...sotto 'na croce fatta 'e lampadine;
tre mazze 'e rose cu 'na lista 'e lutto:
cannele, cannelotte e sei lumine.

Very next to the grave of this lord
there was another very little grave,
it was abandoned without any flower;
as a sign only a little cross.

Proprio azzeccata 'a tomba 'e 'stu signore
nce stava 'n 'ata tomba piccerella,
abbandunata, senza manco un fiore;
pe' segno, sulamente 'na crucella.

And on the cross it was very difficult to read:
"Esposito Gennaro - Dustman"

I felt pain, looking at him ...

This dead man without any candle.

E ncoppa 'a croce appena se liggeva:
"Esposito Gennaro - netturbino":
guardannola, che ppena me faceva
stu muorto senza manco nu lumino!

"That's life" - I thought in my mind...
"Who has had a lot and who hasn't had anything!"
"Was this poor man aware
that he was beggar at the other world too?"

Questa è la vita! 'ncapo a me penzavo...
chi ha avuto tanto e chi nun ave niente!
Stu povero maronna s'aspettava
ca pur all'atu munno era pezzente?

While I was daydreaming to this situation,
It was nearby midnight,

and I was left closed and prisoner,
dead and scared in front of the candles.

Mentre fantasticavo 'stu penziero,
s'era ggià fatta quase mezanotte,
e i 'rimanette 'nchiuso priggiuniero,
muorto 'e paura... nnanze 'e cannelotte.

Suddenly what did I see in the distance?
Two shadows coming to me ...

I thought: "This seems to be very strange ...
Am I awake, sleeping or is it fantasy?"

Tutto a 'nu tratto, che veco 'a luntano?
Ddoje ombre avvicenarse 'a parte mia.
Penzaje: stu fatto a me mme pare strano...
Stongo scetato... dormo, o è fantasia?

It was not fantasy ... he was the marquis:
with the walking stick, the monocle and the greatcoat;
following him, you can see, the ugly badly dressed,
stinker and with a broom in his hand.

Ate che fantasia; era 'o Marchese:
c'o' tubbo, 'a caramella e c'o' pastrano;
chill'ato apriesso a isso un brutto arnese;
tutto fetente e cu 'na scopa mmano.

"Yes, he is for sure Mr Gennaro."
"The dead poor man ... the dustman".
"This situation is very unclear:
they are dead
and they come back at this time?"

E chillo certamente è don Gennaro...
'omuorto puveriello...'o scupatore.
'Int 'a stu fatto i' nun ce veco chiaro:
so' muorte e se ritirano a chest'ora?

They were about a palm away from me,
when suddenly the marquis stopped,
he turned and slowly slowly quite quite,
told to Mr Gennaro: "Hey mate ...

Putevano sta' 'a me quase 'nu palmo,
quanno 'o Marchese se fermaje 'e botto,
s'avota e tomo tomo... calmo calmo,
dicette a don Gennaro: "Giovanotto!

I want to know from a so low swine like you
with what such a dare you have allowed
to bury your body, with my shame,
next a such titled like me!"

Da Voi vorrei saper, vile carogna,
con quale ardire e come avete osato
di farvi seppellir, per mia vergogna,
accanto a me che sono blasonato!

"Caste is caste and it should be respected!
You lost the sense and moderation;
ok, your corpse had to be buried but
I think inside the garbage!"

ma Voi perdeste il senso e la misura;
la Vostra salma andava, sì, inumata;
ma seppellita nella spazzatura!

"I cannot suffer
your stinky presence anymore

so it is necessary that you will find another grave
among your dear, among your similar"

"Mister marquis, It's not my fault,
I had never made this wrong to you,
my wife made this foolish think,
what could I do if I was dead?

"Signor Marchese, nun è colpa mia,
i'nun v'avesse fatto chistu tuorto;
mia moglie è stata a ffa' sta fesseria,
i' che putevo fa' si ero muorto?

If I were live I would make you happy,
I'd get my box with my four bones
and now, you know, just in this moment,
I'd go inside another grave."

Si fosse vivo ve farrei cuntento,
pigliasse 'a casciulella cu 'e qquatt'osse
e proprio mo, obbj'... 'nd'a stu mumento
mme ne trasesse dinto a n'ata fossa".

"So what are you waiting, filthy badly created?
Do you want that my wrath reachs overflow?
If I hadn't been a titled man,
I'd already get angry!"

"E cosa aspetti, oh turpe malcreato,
che l'ira mia raggiunga l'eccedenza?
Se io non fossi stato un titolato
avrei già dato piglio alla violenza!"

"OK, I want to see ... let's take this violence...
You know, marquis, I am annoyed to listen to you
and if I lose my patience
I forget that I am dead and I'll beat you!

"Famme vedé... piglia 'sta violenza...
'A verità, Marché, mme so' scucciato
'e te senti; e si perdo 'a pacienza,
mme scordo ca so' muorto e so mazzate!...

Who do you think you are? A Lord?
Do you know that in this place we are all the same?
Dead are you and dead I am;

everyone is equal to the others."

Ccà dinto, 'o vvuo capi, ca simmo eguale?...
..Muorto si' tu e muorto so' pur'io;
ognuno comme a 'na'ato è tale e qquale".

"Bloody pig! How do you allow

to compare yourself with me thathad as my ancestors very revered,
very nobles and perfect to make regal princes envious?"

"Lurido porco!... Come ti permetti
paragonarti a me
ch'ebbi natali
illustri,
nobilissimi e perfetti,
da fare invidia a Principi Reali?".
"But what Christmas, Easter and Epiphany!!!!
Do you want finally understand inside you brain
That you are still sick of fantasy?
Do you know what is dead? It's a spirit level ...

"Tu qua' Natale... Pasca e Ppifania!!!
T''o vvuo' mettere 'ncapo... 'int'a cervella
che staje malato ancora È fantasia?...
'A morte 'o ssaje ched''e?... è una livella.

A King, a Magistrate, a great man
that coming through this gate has understood
that he has lost everything, life and the name also:
hadn't you already considered this?

'Nu rre, 'nu maggistrato, 'nu grand'ommo,
trasenno stu canciello ha fatt'o punto
c'ha perzo
tutto, 'a vita e pure 'o nomme:
tu nu t'hè fatto ancora chistu cunto?

So, listen to me ... don't be reluctant.

Suffer my presence close to you? Don't you care about it!
This are jokes of alive people:
We are more serious...
We belong to the death

Perciò,  stamme a ssenti... nun fa' 'o restivo,
suppuorteme vicino - che te 'mporta?
Sti ppagliacciate 'e ffanno sulo 'e vive:
nuje simmo serie... appartenimmo â morte!".
